College Championships Abound in Maryland
There were three different college conference championships held in Maryland this past weekend: the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, the Capital Athletic Conference Men’s & Women’s Swimming Championships and the Maryland JUCO Basketball Championships.
Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex hosted the MEAC Championships this year. The Championships started on Thursday and wrapped up on Saturday. The weekend belonged to the Hampton women and the Norfolk State men. Both teams earned identical scores of 161.5 points to win the conference title.
Inside or Out, Winter Sports Thrive in Maryland
The ice and snow our region received this past weekend was a welcome sight for some athletes, but it didn’t leave other athletes out in the cold, either. On Saturday, the University of Maryland track and field team hosted its annual Terrapin Invitational indoor track and field meet at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex. Twenty-three collegiate teams competed in the all-day event.
Crab Bowl Showcases Maryland Talent
This past Saturday, select seniors from around the state of Maryland played in the state’s only statewide high-school all-star game, the Maryland Crab Bowl powered by Under Armour. The game took place at Bowie State University and pitted stand-out seniors from the Washington, DC metro area against ones from the Baltimore metro area.
The game featured over 100 all-star seniors representing public and private schools from all around the state. This year, the Washington All-Stars shutdown the Baltimore All-Stars 14-6. This was Washington’s third win in four years.
The Greatest Rivalry in Sports Returns to the Maryland Gridiron
Tomorrow, FedEx Field in Landover hosts the nation’s most enduring rivalry when the Navy Midshipmen take on the Black Knights of Army (game time is 2:30pm EST). Tomorrow’s game will mark the 112th meeting between the two teams. Navy leads the series, 55-49-7, and have won the past nine straight. When Army and Navy meet pomp and circumstance abound, and tomorrow’s game will be no different.
Maryland SoccerPlex, Ludwig Field Earn National Accolades
The Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) recently announced the winners of their 2011 “Field of the Year” award, and the state of Maryland has two winners: University of Maryland’s Ludwig Field and the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown! Both facilities won in the soccer category, Ludwig Field for “College and University” and the SoccerPlex for “Schools and Parks”.
Feasting on the Competition over the Thanksgiving Holiday
While many of us were spending time gobbling up Thanksgiving leftovers or camping out for Black Friday deals this past weekend, others were busy competing in some big time tournaments around Maryland. We talked about the NATT Teams Championship in Baltimore last week, but there were plenty of other events going on in Maryland. These athletes were busy devouring their competition instead of turkey.
