College Championships Abound in Maryland
There were three different college conference championships held in Maryland this past weekend: the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, the Capital Athletic Conference Men’s & Women’s Swimming Championships and the Maryland JUCO Basketball Championships.
Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex hosted the MEAC Championships this year. The Championships started on Thursday and wrapped up on Saturday. The weekend belonged to the Hampton women and the Norfolk State men. Both teams earned identical scores of 161.5 points to win the conference title.
Hood College Keeps on Believing
Friday was a momentous day for Hood College in Frederick. After 62 years, the college finally opened a brand new athletic center, and OSM was on hand for all the festivities. The new 41,000-square-foot Hood College Athletic Center includes the BB&T Arena, a 1,600-seat arena where the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams will play. It also has a two-floor fitness center, a hospitality center, the Hood College Hall of Fame, coaching offices, four locker rooms, meeting rooms and a full service training room. The complex was the vision of Ron Volpe, who took over as college president ten years ago.
Let’s Hear it for the Girls!
The first weekend in November is all about the ladies…well at least when it comes to athletics! There are quite a few tournaments taking place in Maryland over the next couple of days featuring women athletes. We’ve got a little bit of everything going on this weekend. The 2011 ACC Field Hockey Championships got underway yesterday in College Park, the NJCAA Region 20 Women’s Volleyball Tournament starts tomorrow and goes through Sunday at the College of Southern Maryland, the Primetime Showcase girl’s lacrosse tournament is on Saturday and the Fall Lax Clash tournament is on Sunday, both at Cedar Lane Park in Bel Air.
City of Frederick Bicycle History Trail
We’ve written before about the City of Frederick and their commitment to bicycling. They are already building trails that connect the community and its various amenities. They are engineering bike lanes on existing streets, following a comprehensive bicycle-friendly transportation system. Now, they are taking their initiatives in yet another direction – heritage tourism.
Leveraging a $3,000 grant from the Tourism Council with some City funds and in-kind services, The City of Frederick has designated a ten-mile loop that connects 21 of the most significant points in their four centuries of history. Read the rest of this entry
Autos, Bikes & Boats, Oh My!
There were many exciting sporting events that took place this past weekend in our great state. From fishing to cycling, Maryland had something to offer all sports fans. We’ll be covering auto racing in Southern Maryland, bicycle road racing in the suburbs of DC, tuna fishing down the beach and youth lacrosse in and around Baltimore.
First up were the IHRA Junior Dragster Finals. Held at the Maryland International Raceway in Budds Creek, the three-day event featured practice sessions, special races, games, and the final points-based competition on Sunday. The Junior Dragster racers from Northeast Dragway in North Carolina won the IHRA Junior Team Finals against 26 teams from 18 different tracks.
Capital Region Round-Up
Maryland has hosted some pretty cool events recently, and we’ve talked about some of them already, like Monster Jam and the U.S. Open Championships. This past weekend the Capital Region hosted a handful of significant sporting events. One of the busiest venues was the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Montgomery County.
